This seems a bit counterproductive to me... in the end big business isn't going to lose that much, especially if people just buy it the next quarter.
In order for this to work like people want it to work you have to make a pact not to buy anything -- ever again. And since the odds of that happening are very slim... well.
And more to the point, this is seriously going to hurt small businesses including comic book stores, local book stores, etc. Why not, instead make a pact to buy locally and from small, independent businesses? Not rely on Amazon or Best Buy or Walmart or Target. Or better yet, for music, buy directly from the artist whenever possible.
And these are just my general, non-expert thoughts on the matter. I'd hate for my lcs to close because people thought not buying comics was the right way to approach this situation.
This is exactly how I feel. Let's boycott the companies pushing for.SOPA/PIPA and instead spend our money at places that don't. Not buying for one month will not only not be a huge blip on a mega corporation's radar, but they will then think they're doing right when things bounce back even better in April. Small businesses, however, along with independent presses/studios and actors/authors/musicians/directors who are just getting started will feel this hard.
I'd hate to close down those people while trying to hurt the big guys supporting SOPA/PIPA. That would make us no better than the people who went after Mega Upload and got thousands of legitimate files taken down while trying to stop pirates that have multiple sites.
I agree. I think the better course would be to only buy locally, to give the business to your used book, comic and video stores. That way your money is spent only where it is need and not to line the larger businesses pockets.
Also, don't forget that for musicians and authors, at least, you can often buy new copies if their work directly from them or from the studio/publisher. Obviously that doesn't help if the studio/publisher supports SOPA/PIPA, but if they don't, tell them why you're buying direct. That will send a great thank you and will give the artist a bigger royalty check too (as if they get a percent of each sale, they get a percent of what the publisher makes, and they make less when a third part sells it for them).
Let's not only boycott the people/companies supporting SOPA/PIPA, but also support the ones standing against it with us.
