So Deputy PM Sergei Ivanov visited the Kurils, Foreign Minister Matsumoto wasn't pleased, and said Russia was hurting the Japanese people's feelings.
... I don't think Russian politicians particularly care one whit how we feel about a bunch of rocks 99% of us have no ties to.
While wailing over Ainu territory lost in WWII, our politicians persist on claiming territory that was never ours, stolen from Korea during our shameful colonial period, had been ours all along.
On the plus side,
it looks like Russia may actually do something with the territories. I hope it ends well.
When I graduated high school, Ma took me to Kamchatka by a ship that went along the Kurils. Pretty little rocks for all their severity, but what settlements there were had been on the large islands depressing and ramshackle. I would rather that there hadn't been any at all, but if there must be human habitation, it would be good to at least bring it up to a better standard of living and make it a little more eco-friendly.
Just for the sake of the endangered animals that make the Kurils their homes, I hope the Russian politicians don't screw it up in their efforts to one-up Japan.
