Ok, since there's no news on the job front (yet another rejection email! Yippe! See how hard it is to get excited about that?) I thought I'd talk about what has been cool. Food. When my life gets out of control I tend to start cooking.

I picked up a volunteer gig with my new CSA this season (www.grashoppersdistribution.com). Yes, I've been sampling ( Read more... )

I was oh so very tempted. But, there was good stuff in the box and I wouldn't lie to you like that.

CSA = Community Supported Agriculture. Find one near you at www.localharvest.org

Basically, there's two really good ways of getting local food. The first is finding a farmer's market. You go, you buy what you like, you're done. Major drawbacks - they all invariably seem to happen at 0dark30 on a saturday. But this is good for people just experimenting with this, you get to meet everyone and see what grows in your area.

The second is the CSA plan - you pay up front and then get whatever comes in that week, divided up among however many people are participating. Easy as can be, just go and pick up your stuff. And it makes food budgeting easier, I basically only buy bread, soymilk and supplemental fruit during the summer, since I've already paid for the bulk of my groceries. Downsides are the large upfront investment and if the weather sucks you get less food for your money.

Well, a third option is to find someone with a garden, or share a space with a few people and divvy up the labor and the profits. But you said you were lazy, so I doubt that's going to happen. This one is actually fun if you have enough people to divide the work up, but it is a lot of work.
