Kris took a deep breath and clenched the edge of his seat. It wasn’t the first time he had ever flown, but take-off always made him panic. He heard the countdown begin, and closed his eyes. 3, 2, 1…Space Shuttle Andromeda, you are clear for take off. The shuttle began its lift and violently shook. Kris tried to keep his breathing even, but nothing was working to keep him calm. His chest began to tighten and hurt. When the shaking finally stopped about a minute and a half later, he opened his eyes and stretched his fingers, looking out of the window ahead.
It had been over a year and a half since he had been off the planet, and now he would be leaving it for at least three years, if their mission was successful. If it wasn’t, well, he had said his goodbyes. He remembered when, as a child, he learned about the first person from Earth to ever reach their moon, and now they were off to explore a newly discovered planet on the very edge of the Milky Way Galaxy. He wondered what people in the 18- or 1900s would say if they were still alive today.
Kris stared with wide eyes at the millions of stars they passed, the brilliantly lit nebulas, the gases and dust. It was all one massive mystery that was too much to comprehend. Something about this vast, immeasurable mass frightened him. He wasn’t sure if it was the fact that it never ended, was just a bunch gas and dust in a whole lot of nothing, or if it was the eternal, deafening silence that bothered him the most. He jumped when he felt a hand on his shoulder.
“Hey, you alright, man? You haven’t said anything, like…at all, even before take off. You’ve been sort of mute all day.” Leave it to David to worry about him when his own life could very well be at stake. Kris wiped that thought out of his mind; he shouldn’t be thinking so negatively.
“Yeah, I’m alright. I’m just anxious, I guess. So, how long do you think it will take to get there? I mean, obviously, it will be a long time, but…how long?” Kris mentally kicked himself. Why was he so freaked out by this? Why couldn’t he just relax, like everyone else? He had been in outer space the majority of his life, he really shouldn’t be this nervous. David thought for a moment.
“Uh, well, if we keep up this speed-which I doubt Captain Take-His-Time over there will allow-we should be there in about three to five days. If he slows down, which, of course, he will, it will take about a week to a week and a half. So, sit back and enjoy the insanely-long-but-really-doesn’t-have-to-be ride.” Kris grinned. He was right; on every mission they had done together, Danny had taken his time to get there and back. In his opinion, “what’s the rush?”
David and Kris have been friends since high school, both of them entering training at age seventeen and going on their first mission together. They hadn’t gone on a trip yet without each other; it was one of their promises upon entering the training camp. Their last three missions had been with Danny, also. Kris didn’t mind their slightly slow captain, but David couldn’t stand him. He wasn’t willing to be rude to his face, but he also wasn’t exactly friendly. Kris sighed and sat back; it would definitely be a long ride.
