History:

First some background on the game itself...

It begins in the Junkyard, where six tribes are locked in constant war with one another in an effort to reach Nirvana. Unbeknownst to the tribe members, however, the Junkyard is actually a virtual reality, and the people there are nothing more than AIs being used to test and compare battle strategies. The tribe that kills off all the other tribe leaders will be rewarded with admittance into Nirvana (later revealed as the 'real world'), where their data will be uploaded into real people to create super soldiers. The focus is on the Embryon, the newest tribe in the Junkyard.

In the beginning, everyone is essentially an emotionless killing machine, doing what they're programmed to do without question. It all changes when a strange, egg-like object shows up on the borders between the Embryon's and the Vanguards' territories. Both tribes investigate, each assuming the object is some sort of weapon placed there by the other. A battle begins, but it becomes apparent that neither side is responsible for the object, which suddenly opens and hits everyone in the vicinity with beams of light. Those affected are branded with unique Atma marks and transform into demons. The battle resumes, bloodier than before, and then everything goes black.

When the Embryon awaken, they find that the Vanguards have fled. Sleeping in a crater left behind by the object is a girl, whom the Embryon take back to their base. She tells them her name is Sera and that she doesn't remember anything, but she knows she's there to help them. Although hesitant, they don't immediately discount her claim and allow her to stay at the base.

Shortly after that, the Embryon's leader--Serph--is summoned to the Karma Temple, as are the leaders of the other tribes. There, the dissemination machine is hacked by someone calling herself Angel, who informs the leaders that their objective has changed. By now, they've realized that something is happening; tribe members are acting strangely, their emotions are becoming unstable, and they're able to turn into demons. Angel tells them that this is because of the Atma and that their new goal is to devour their all of their enemies and bring Sera to the Karma Temple. The tribe that completes this task will be allowed into Nirvana and achieve eternal paradise.

During the first part of the game, we don't see much of Cielo, as he is tasked with watching over Sera while Serph, Heat, and Argilla work on overtaking other tribes by forming an alliance with the Maribel. At one point his comrade, Gale, is overcome by the Atma virus' desire for flesh and attacks Cielo, only able to be stopped by Sera's soothing song. From then on, Cielo is grateful to Sera for saving his life and vows to protect her.

Later, the Embryon and Maribel are betrayed by one of the Maribel's own, who decided to side with the bigger, stronger Solids tribe. At this time, the Solids' leader, Mick, launches an attack on the Embryon base, abducting Sera and leaving Cielo alive to lure the Embryon to Coordinate 136. Having failed to protect Sera, Cielo's emotions fully awaken, and he insists on coming along in order to redeem himself, but he's turned down due to his injuries and is essentially put under house arrest at the base. He's able to escape with the help of a cat that keeps mysteriously appearing throughout the Junkyard, and he joins the group just in time to save Sera from falling from the top of the Destiny Land castle at Coordinate 136. The group then defeats Mick and moves Sera to a new base.

All of this leads up to the Embryon having a showdown with Varin, the leader of the Brutes and the last tribe standing between them and Nirvana. However, the Brutes' base is a mansion that sparks some nostalgia within Serph, Heat, Argilla, and Cielo. They recognize it as Sera's home and realize that they've been there before.

During their battle with Varin--who insists they call him Colonel Beck--he reveals that everyone in the Junkyard has been to this supposed "Nirvana" before, until they died and were reincarnated in the Junkyard. He demands to know why no one remembers being devoured by Serph, much to the group's confusion.

After his defeat, all that's left to do is return to the Karma Temple with Sera. Unfortunately, being in the mansion awakens Sera's memories, and she leaves the Embryon behind, heading to the Karma Temple alone. The Embryon follow her to the top of the temple, where they find her confronting Angel. A battle ensues, and once Angel is defeated, the Junkyard is destroyed. Yet, instead of disappearing with the rest of the data, the group manifests bodies in the real world, where the sun's corrupt data is turning people to stone.

Thus begins the second game! (...Which I have yet to finish, but I would be bringing him in from the midst of it.)

The group is separated for a while; Serph, Gale, and Argilla end up earning the trust of a boy named Fred, who takes them to the undeground Lokapala city. There, they learn that Roland, the Lokapala leader, has already found Cielo and is currently holding him captive. He uses him as a bargaining chip, coercing the others into infiltrating the internment camp, where people are being held prisoner, later to become food for the Karma Society.

After a change of heart, Roland joins the party, bringing Cielo along with him. It's implied that the Lokapala didn't treat Cielo well while they had him, as he feared he would die, but what actually transpired isn't given any detail.

From there, it's a race to save Sera and find out what's really going on.

As for the "real" Cielo, the one his AI counterpart is based on: he is largely unknown. He was a test subject for the Karma Society's "God Project", but the telepathic tests drove him mad and eventually killed him. It is known that he struck up a long lasting friendship with Sera, though.

Personality:

Cielo is what he is: upbeat, cheerful, friendly, and foolish, often acting as comic relief and playing the fool to serious characters like Gale. He's one of the few Embryon that doesn't show a major reaction to becoming a flesh-eating demon, suggesting that he takes the change in stride, which fits with his normally chill demeanor. He has a habit of becoming quite emotional when he's upset, though.

Friends are important to him, evidenced not only by his gratefulness to Sera for saving his life but by mentioning things such as wanting to see her smile and dismissing the claims that they're only AIs because he likes his friends, and that's all that matters.

It may seem like there isn't much depth to his personality, which is due to the way he was created. Sera was a child when she met the real Cielo, who was only a boy himself; her perception of him is colored by her naiveté at the time.

Other:

Due to his Atma brand, Cielo can transform into the demon Dyaus, who is capable of flight and using bolt magic. It also makes him hunger for flesh, and if that desire is not met, it's possible for one to be overtaken by the demon and go mad, which is what briefly happened to Gale.

By "hunger for flesh", I am referring to cannibalism. I realize this is a sensitive topic, and I am fully prepared to cut, lock, and warn for such content when it is warranted. <3

Oh yeah, and I figured I should mention somewhere that he speaks with a heavy Jamaican accent.

First Person (entry type):

[audio]

'Ey, community... I gotta question for you all. When someone tells you you're just a program dat's been created by somebody else... what you tink dat means? Dat means you were never real to begin wit', ja? But what about tings you know dat you shouldn't...? It's all so confusing!

Den dere's de possibility we were alive before, and dat's where de memories come from, but... if we died, how'd we get to de Junkyard? Oy, I give myself a headache wit' all dis...

Anyway, de question is: should it even matter? We could be programs or we could be dese 'ghosts' people call us, but if we're ourselves and together... dat's all dat's important. Right?

What you tink?

Third Person:

Prompt: There's a wallet on the sidewalk. What now?

"Mm? What's dis?" Cielo bent to retrieve the object he'd unwittingly kicked aside. It was a wallet, he knew, though he hadn't seen many for himself. The brown leather was crusted with dried blood and dirt, but so were many things around here; it was hardly remarkable. What did catch his attention were the initials embossed on the front, though. He ran his fingers over them. "'DD', huh? Wonder what dat mean..."

Letting his curiosity get the best of him, he opened the wallet to see what was inside but hadn't counted on anything falling out. To his surprise, a small booklet hit the pavement and briefly flipped open before closing on its side. He frowned at it uncertainly and, after a quick glance around, crouched to get a closer look.

The booklet was filled with pictures. Not just any pictures, of course--photographs of people, some faded and crinkled, but distinct. Cielo picked the booklet up and thumbed through it, head cocked to the side. A portrait of a man and woman stared back at him first, then a photo of the same woman by herself, and then a kid on a bike...

He paused there, his gaze lingering on the child's face for a long time. He recognized this kid...

"One of Fred's friends," he said quietly to himself. He set the booklet down and turned his attention back to the wallet. There wasn't much in there, aside from a few plastic cards with numbers on them. He didn't know if they'd mean anything to anyone, but to throw them away somehow felt wrong. It was clear this wallet belonged to someone that little girl knew, and it was clear to Cielo that that someone was very likely devoured. Hadn't she said something about wanting to find her father...?

With a sick feeling in his stomach, he stuffed the booklet back in the wallet and stood, tucking the whole thing away in his belt. He was now faced with two choices: show the kid what he found, which would probably break her heart but allow her to cherish the memories in the photos, or let her believe there was still hope.

He didn't know what to do.
