The sky over the playground opened up and let forth a powerful rain. Below, children scattered, giggling gleefully as they ran for their umbrellas.
JP knew what came next, and he dreaded it. Dragging himself from the swings, he braced himself for the first crash of thunder, the first vein of lightning to etch across the sky. But nothing could prepare him for when it actually happened, and he nearly bit his lip in his effort not to cry out in fear.
It was a stupid phobia, he thought, and he was resolved to do something about it.
With a fire in his soul and shaking hands, he climbed to the top of the jungle gym as another bolt seared the sky. It took him a moment, but he braced himself and stood on trembling legs. "I'm not afraid," he said to himself, despite visible evidence to the contrary.
"I'm not afraid," he said again, louder this time. The storm didn't care, and thundered on.
He winced, biting back another cry. "I'm not afraid! I'm not afraid!" he screamed at the top of his lungs, rain drenching his hair and jumpsuit. "I'm not afraid! You hear me? I said I'm not afraid of you!"
The storm's reaction had perfect timing, sending the loudest boom at that very moment. JP couldn't control it this time, and screamed, taking the playground bars two at a time in an effort to get back on solid ground.
"...I *am* afraid..." he muttered under his breath, inaudable even to himself under the storm's cover.
