Without ze spoilers, I will now recommend what is probably one of the best movies I've seen in a while (I may be biased). How to Train Your Dragon. I wanted to see it when I first saw the trailer, and I went with my best friend yesterday to watch it in 3-D. We almost ducked into Clash of the Titans, but with my puppy-dog face I kept us in the theater I wanted to go to. :D
Anyway, this movie centers around a teenage Viking named Hiccup (he comments on his poor name choice within the movie's first two minutes) who...just doesn't seem to fit in. All the other Vikings fight and kill dragons that raid their village and he is...well, a walking disaster. He's really good at building things and he has a bit of a dry wit the others don't seem to, but his unique traits brand him as, well, not a good Viking. When it seems that one of his tinkered machines works and he goes to find the dragon he may have shot down, he finds he can't exactly kill the beast and lets it go. Through a series of observations where he learns the dragon -- who he names Toothless due to his retractable teeth -- can't fly anymore, he starts to befriend it and the two of the two of them spend more and more time together. At the same time, to keep him out of trouble, he's put in dragon training, where all of his interactions with Toothless give him different ways to defeat the dragons. As he slowly realizes that the Viking teachings are wrong, it's up to him to decide where he belongs and what he's meant to do -- and discover why the dragons are raiding the village.
So there may have been some spoilers, but if I'm writing something to get people to see the movie...
Anyway, the animation is top-notch-flawless, and I have a feeling seeing it 2-D wouldn't be bad. The 3-D didn't make the movie, but certain scenes just took my breath away (and the trailers were fantastic as well, but I'm not getting into that). The characterization isn't choppy like in some animated movies, and the hand gestures and dialogue in general is very realistic. Voice acting is top notch, jokes are actually funny (and not just geared toward small children), and the plot is rather dark at times, the word kill being thrown around like a feather. A brilliant soundtrack and the Animal Friend in the Boy and His X plot -- Toothless, our dragon -- actually having a personality and a character of his own make this probably the best dragon film I've seen. Let's face it, dragon fans. There are not many. Especially with Eragon, dragon fanatics find too few films that satisfy our needs and aren't aimed at young children.
How to Train Your Dragon isn't just a kids flick, nor is it one pointed toward the older crowd. It's a movie everyone can enjoy, in 2-D or 3-D, and it will capture you completely after the first five minutes.
Seriously, go see this movie. If anything, Toothless being the most badass and adorable dragon at the same time should convince people.
