FAVOURITE THINGS THAT START WITH 'S'

This is also cross-posted to my football alter-ego, jennis_footie.

I liked this meme when I saw it in lady_croft's LJ and I asked her to give me a letter. It is 'S'. What you do to get your own letter is comment on this post and I will give you your letter. Then you just have to list the things you love/like best that begin with that letter, and include a brief explanation.

1. SPORTS

LOL. Everyone who knows me knows I love SOCCER (or futbol/football) more than any other sport, although I appreciate others as well: mainly tennis, NFL football, boxing and figure skating. I also helped coach my kids in baseball when they were younger and know the game like the back of my hand. Although I've been to many, many baseball games, it is not as much fun to watch as the faster games. When I was young I participated in synchronized swimming and gymnastics, and still love to watch both sports at the Olympics.

2. SPURS

No, not the kind you wear when horse riding! My favourite Spurs would be Tottenham Hotspur, a team from the area of London, England where my mother was born. I love this football team, who play in the EPL (English Premier League) and who have a great bunch of players at the moment, who play very exciting football.

3. SPAIN

What a glorious country Spain is, full of sunshine, great architecture, food and fascinating history. I visited southern Spain last year, Sevilla and Cadiz mainly, and can't wait to go back!

4. SUSHI

Mmmm. My current favourite food. I love salmon, eel and California roll best. And shrimp. It goes down very well with warm sake at my relaxing local sushi bar. Lately I've been going there to sit and read Michael Owen's autobiography. It's one of the few places I can be nice and quiet and read. You see, there are curtains they pull across each booth so everyone can be private.

5. SUNDAYS

This is a day of rest for me, in which to watch footie on the TV or maybe a movie on DVD, cook a large meal in leisurely style and enjoy time with the family. Those are my favourite things to do on a Sunday, but sometimes it's necessary to go out and visit other family, etc. It is also nice to take a long drive in the country, stop by the apple orchard and pick apples, go for a hayride, etc., until the price of gas went up!

6. SUMMER

My favourite season, for the obvious reasons, since I live in Canada, is summertime. I love lounging around the pool or gardening, and watching summer sports. It's nice when at work to go downstairs and eat lunch in the outdoor patio of the coffee shop below us. I love to wear light clothing and not have to scrape ice and snow off my car and the driveway. I also like not slipping on the ice and falling down. (Did that three times last year. Ouch.)

7. SEA

I was born in Vancouver, which is a coastal city on the Pacific Ocean. The sea is 'in my blood'. I love the scent of it, the cool breezes that blow off of it, the sight of the sun glinting on the waves, and watching sailing ships in the distance. One of my favourite memories of Portugal was standing in the patio bar of the Pousada Hotel in Setubal, high on the cliffside and looking out over the Atlantic toward Canada three nights before coming home. I'll never forget the sight of ships on the water, the sounds of people talking and enjoying themselves and feeling the soft breezes wafting against my face. *sigh*

8. SOUTH AMERICA

I have never been there - YET. I have been reading about Chile, a most fascinating and colourful country, and I plan a trip there soon. I'd also love to visit Buenos Aires within the next couple of years, after hearing about it from some of our patients who were refugees from Argentina about ten or so years ago. Now that the political clime is alright there, it would be a good time to go. The city is huge, buzzing with all sorts of things to see and do, and of course, has some of the best football in the world!

9. SINGING

I have always loved singing, even as a child. I am not saying that I am any good at it, but I can carry a tune and I listen to CDs while driving, singing along with my favourites. I am one of those people who sing in the shower to the chagrin of my husband, but I do feel that it starts the day off right! One of my biggest singing thrills was being chosen to appear in the Christmas Pageant at my church when I was about 7 or 8 years old! I played a shepherd, got to wear a fantastic costume and sang "While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks By Night".

10. SNOW

Despite the fact that summer is my favourite season, I do love snow in the winter. I think it's just a part of the Canadian psyche. I am not that much into winter sports, although I used to skate and go tobogganing a lot when I was a kid. There is nothing more invigorating than a hike outdoors on a sunny winter day with snow all about. Birdwatching is fun in the snow as well, as long as the day is nice. It can be surprisingly warm in winter here when the sun is out.
