i think i'm going to start writing short stories. i might even start out with short stories and then meld them all into a novel. that's the only way i could do it. bits and pieces. then chunks. then it will just be about making the connections. i need structure, otherwise i'll never be able to do it. it will be difficult and it will take a ( Read more... )

ah! you don't resemble your icon at all =)

yay for mostly positive passion! i find myself less passionate than i'd like but just as positive as i could wish. i envy you a little.

well, i've always considered myself a writer--i wrote a 10-page opus in first grade and never gave up on that self-image. as far as "useful output", well, much of it has been via email, livejournal, or diary. i've always been a boy of letters, but like you i lack focus for longer-term projects. i am *very* thrilled with some of my shorter (than short story, even) outputs, so i don't feel like that's a loss, but it's certainly easier to toss off and be done with.

the novels i wrote thanks to national novel writing month. it may not start out as your best work, but it definitely gets you in the habit of writing a lot, often, and that turned out to me a great focusing agent for me. in fact, except for an novel-length travellogue, they are the only substantial single things i've written since high school, too.

committing oneself is the hardest part of the art. the rest is already in you just looking for an outlet =)
