Four years ago, when we came back to China to stay with my grandparents for two months, I would occasionally wonder what my mom was doing back in Pennsylvania. When we got back, we saw that she had cut her hair, lost weight, and got toned.
I guess when you don't have three kids to worry about, you have a lot more time on your hands to do things for yourself.
I have these thoughts about her going to movies and plays and throwing wild cocktail parties where she and her Chinese friends drink martinis and reminisc about their lives before children.
But she doesn't do that. After work, she comes home and makes herself dinner. After dinner she goes online and reads articles written in Chinese by Chinese people about being Chinese. Or being American. She swims either every day or every other day, depending on the time she has. My mom's not lazy like I am, she actually exercises on her own free will. And then she comes home and watches whatever bad sitcom that's airing on primetime television because she likes bad sitcoms. She doesn't like to think when she's watching movies or TV. She says if she wants to think, she'll read a book. After laughing with the laugh track, she turns to CNN and listens to pundits debate about whatever the new fad is to debate about this week while she reads articles again. Sometimes she watches the Daily Show. Sometimes she goes to sleep.
My mom's one of thoes peace and quite types. Sometimes I think I am too. But I'm a teenager, so I'm not.
I have so much stuff I need to do before school starts.
