I've more or less completed the basic design documentation for how things will flow/go. Namely, the tools available to the player. I have put a lot of thought into them. They may not be quite as amazing in practice as they seem on paper - my first task of order is to figure out once and for all which engine I want to use to build this demonstration and create a little playable environment in which to mess with these until I can tune them to my satisfaction (and maybe yours, too, I might make it publicly available but no guarantees yet).
It's a toss-up between Game Maker 8.1, Multimedia Fusion 2, and Construct 2. All three seem capable of doing what I want it to. I'm hearing MMF2 is the most kludgy, but as stated in a previous post I've been becoming fast friends with a guy making a game very similar to what I want to make in this same language. Game Maker 8.1 seems the least expensive to properly buy for use. Both MMF2 and C2 are pricey if I want to really do much serious with it, though C2 is newer (to wit) and is also touted for ease of use.
I've been researching various comparisons and am still trying to make up my mind before I proceed.
I'm also going to attempt to learn how to properly track chiptunes. I should have stuck with my attempts back in the late 90's/early 00's - part of my monetization plan will be making a soundtrack to put on bandcamp for some pocket change, if I can make it work. Probably not, but fingers crossed.
This is also because I have a long-time friend who is an artist I would love to hire in some places, but cannot provide any sort of salary for. His background work is phenomenal and his character work is still very solid. Maybe something will work out, but right now that's out of the question.
Challenges! Learning to be a renaissance man! Really, the only thing I do well is write. I already know what I want to write here. That will not be an issue at all.
