Game update... there isn't one. Actually I haven't touched Game Maker at all. But if I'm going to be serious about this I'll need to. This also probably means cutting back on online play pretend entirely, among other things

You should consider making a production document for your game. It'll get a lot done before you even touch game maker.

I have, actually, but it's stymied by the fact that I don't want to set certain things in stone without playing around with some ideas in a test stage first.

Which requires me to at minimum make and program some things before I cement them and design stuff around them. Such things are most integral to what I want to do, far beyond the narrative and character designs wrapped around it.
