NaNoWriMo day 25 - all done!

Nov 25, 2011 10:52

The last few days I got really pissed off. I tried to sleep at 11 PM, would wake up at 2 AM and some change. Dreams invariably involved dark tunnels of minecraft and cursing the incompetence of whoever I was witnessing, for some very strange reason.

So, today, I decided it was enough of that and chose to write from 3 or 4 AM onward. It's 10:48 AM now as I write, and I made the final surge to the very finish line.

8000 words, a major push more in line with my performances last year, to the grand final total of 51000.

The story is actually very much finished, although I really don't like most of it. I think the ending is about perfect, give or take a few details.

Frankly, before this all started I knew my concept was going to be very hard to stretch out realistically to the target number. I somehow managed, all the same. I intended it to be a young/young adult story, but I'm not even sure if I hit the mark. It's not just content, it's choice of words and everything. I write at way too high a grade level, I think, so in this regards it's largely a failure.

On the other hand, this is the third successful NaNoWriMo in a row for me since I started in '09, even if it took forever.

It's made me wonder about the value of working in huge bursts as opposed to doing just something almost every day. I didn't always write 1,667 words every day, but I did legitimately float around or a bit above par (one day the NaNoWriMo word counter was acting funky so that one apparent miss doesn't count).

It really is time to just do more of this, and not just on Novembers. To this end, I probably won't be doing this sort of thing again.

Now I can put this whole thing behind me and... do... something else.
