I posted something to the States at the beginning of the month and recently found out that it never arrived. This surprised me as it had been sent via and "international signed for" service provided by the ever lovely Royal Mail. I wasn't actually aware of this service until the itme was sent because it was posted for me by a friend. Now, normally I don't bother with insurance or registering something small and as this was worth under £10 it didn't occur to me that you could, but the service was offered and she said yes. OK, I thought, better safe than sorry, good idea.
HOWEVER, I have been in touch with the person I was sending it to and they haven't received it so I thought I'd find out what happened and ask Royal Mail who signed for it. Spoke to someone on Thursday who told that
"...we cannot track it outside of the country."
WHAT'S THE POINT. What is the point of providing an international signature service THAT CAN'T BE TRACKED OUTSIDE THE COUNTRY!!!!!!
The best he could do was tell me that it had arrived in San Francisco the day after it was posted. That's no good to me - that was the 6th August. What's happened to it since then? Why hasn't it been received by the person it was posted to? How can I make a claim?
Well that's another thing. Apparently I can't make a claim until 25 WORKING DAYS after the EXPECTED DELIVERY DATE. Well how long is that? that's 5 WORKING days after posting. So we're talking a total of SIX WEEKS before I can make a claim and they start looking for my letter. Anything could have happened to it in that time.
As the letter contained payment for an eBay item I'm a little ticked off. Now I have to reactivate my PayPal account with my new bank details so that I can send him the money that way. I've been sending small amounts of money to the States for years without witout insurance with no problems. At least I can claim this back so I'm not out of pocket but I certainly won't be using this particular RM "service" again.
