It sucks having no money or transportation. Today I have to go do laundry at the laundramat, then I go to the ceramics studio to mix clay for free because I have the hook up. Then afterwards I will drag my 150 pounds of earth to the sculpture yard to get to work with my texan friend steve. We are going to rock out the studio because it's always empty on fridays because the sculpture kids like to drink.
Here's the art words for today... today im talking about ceramics
Mother=clay
Sager=a vitreous fired clay canister that holds bisqueware for special firings
Throwing=the act of making an object on the wheel
The Wheel=come on people you know this one... just watch the movie "Ghost"
Narakomi=two or more different types of clay mixed together to make a marbled effect
Greenware=any clay form that has not yet been fired
Throwing "off the hump"=asian technique of throwing multiple pots using the same piece of clay
Kiln=a large oven that clay is cooked in to harden it
Porcelain(sp?)=A white clay that is unique from all other clays in the respect that it is both translucent and can vibrate when struck to produce a tone
"Stacking" a Kiln=loading a kiln
sgraffito(sp?)=the act of using the butt end of a paint brush to make an indented line on a surface... this term is commonly used in painting as well
Inlay=cutting out indentions in a clay form and replacing it with colored clay
The 8 stages of clay: mud(terra sigilata), plastic, post-plastic, leather-hard, bone dry, bisque, vitreous, broken
Some different types of clay:Stoneware, Terra Cotta, Porcelain, Brownstone, Raku Clay, and Fire Clay
Some different types of clay tools:fettling(sp?)knife, rib tool(kidney scraper),loop tool, wire cutting tool(frog), sponge, and calipers
I really could go on forever... but let's just stop now... i'll do sculpture terms tomorrow... that's my major so there will be lots of stuff.
Enjoy
