Prompt: When You Taught Me How to Dance - Katie Melua

James and Lily had recently announced their intention to marry, and while they just wanted a small, simple wedding, they wanted their friends from school and from the Order to be there. Fabian and Emmeline had both been invited, of course. There would be a party after. There was too much gloom going around lately, and they wanted everyone to relax a bit. There’d be plenty of time for fighting later.

So Fabian had explained to Emmeline with some embarrassment that he couldn’t dance. It was one of the things he had no natural talent for.

Then Emmeline had offered to teach him.

So here they were, in Fabian’s living room, trying to learn something that passed enough as dancing to get by at the party.

It wasn’t going well.

“Fabian, you keep stepping on my foot. Your left foot is supposed to go over there,” Emmeline said for what seemed like the tenth time, somehow managing not to lose patience with him.

“I know that,” Fabian replied. “I just can’t make it do that.”

“I don’t get it,” Emmeline said. “You can do all that fancy Quidditch stuff but you can’t dance.”

“That’s flying. This is dancing. Flying is not the same as dancing.”

Suddenly Emmeline had an idea. “What if we made dancing like Quidditch? You use diagrams and things to practice Quidditch things, right, so what if we did that for dance moves?”

“Can’t really be any worse, can it?” Fabian said. “It’s worth a try.”

Half an hour later, with some improvised diagrams of dance moves, Fabian could dance well enough that no one would even know he’d had these problems in the first place. His living room had become an impromptu dance floor as he led her in dance after dance (the same one every time though, because they hadn’t had time to learn more than that).

“So long as you stick with this one, no one will know,” she said to him.

He just grinned. “This is fun. We should do it again.”

“Count on it. Now that I know you can do it, I’m not letting you get out of it.”

Fabian really didn’t mind.
