Fabian knocked on the door of the parents' house, the house he had been raised in. he enjoyed coming back, every time, because it was his parents' house. Today was saturday, he had no training sessions today, and he was joining them for lunch.

Today was also a on which he had something to tell them, and he wasn't sure how they were going to take it. He'd brought along his standard bottle of wine, although he knew they wouldn't open it until later.

As his mother opened the door and invited him in, he decided that he would save his news until after lunch, so that they would enjoy at least the meal itself. It was just a simple affair of sandwiches and her best plum cake, and he finally worked up the courage to tell them.

“Mum, Dad,” he started after they had finished their lunch and were enjoying a cup of tea, “I have something to tell you.” he set down his tea and looked up them on the other side of the table. “Emmeline and I, after she graduates, are moving in together.”

his mother just looked at him for a moment. “Well, dear, of course this is your decision, and it is nice that you have plans and the like. It's just that this is a commitment, and I'm sure you know that. I'm not sure I understand why you can make this commitment but not a commitment to marriage.”

“We want to,” he said. “Someday we will. But not yet. You know as well as I do that there's war out there. It may not be the worst it's going to get, but it's out there. We just don't want it to overshadow a day that should be about celebration. Plus, neither one of us really wants to be celebrating when there are so many reasons not to. It's just one thing at a time, and that's not the one thing right now.” he looked right at his mother. “It will happen. We're just not to that point yet.”

his assurances on that point seemed to appease his mother (only temporarily, he knew; she would certainly mention this again, probably every chance she got). She did at least accept this was what was going to happen, and he knew that things would not change considerably between them. Family was family.
