Terror Management Theory. The theory that since we can think about our own death we have to find ways of managing the terror that inspires. From this religion and organized groups can be seen as a way for us to submerge the self and allow for a limited sence of immortality.
You might ask why am I bringing this up on christmas eve of all times but in a way though it may sound like escapism and completely anti-festive it really isn't. Though we may fear death maybe that is also a strength. We grow closer to one another so we don't have to be a lone and worried. We seek out the warmth of another to find solice in the time we do have and charish it as much as possible.
This segways into the next bit. For the first time in my life I find myself with a friend dying on me. This is unexpected as I just found out when I returned to sarnia that the person is in paliative care and pretty much not expected to make it past the beginning of Feb. I won't bore you with the details but on this eve of all nights it is important for us to remember we live and though we may fear death it is important to take time to charish what we do have because we never know when it could be our turn to meet what ever fate happens after we live this world. So tomorrow when you are with your family and loved ones charish the time you have with them for it is the greatest gift we have, the ability to love and be loved and submerge this fear in order to share the incredible experiences life has to offer.
Be well one and all and I wish you all the most joyous christmas.
