Had a positive Supervision today. Makes a change. I think my sixth draft of my Literature Review has been accepted. Proff Spiers must be feeling ill, or as actually read the Dept. style guide for submitting work.
I need to expand two bits - historiography of the campaign/war and major themes such as the overall strategy (or lack thereof), Florence Nightingale, the press reportage.
historiography of the unofficial "official" history by R W Kinglake. Put him into context and basically critique the hell out of him.
Ive been told NOT to defer until all funding avenues have been exhausted and Ive got half a dozen places to contact tomorrow re grants.
I also need to start writing up chapters; I can get stuff on the Zouaves into shape and also the Cavalry. Which means I need to get my arse into gear and read and take notes from all the French letters (as in books not preventatives) I have.
Sadly, my supervisor thinks the work I did at the NAM isnt enough and I need to go back at least twice, once to go through the Journals they have and also the Manuscript sources.
My meeting with my Superintendent this evening was also good. He says that he can see no reason why I cant start training as a local preacher (again) and go back on note. However, despite being a trained and acreditted local preacher wit the Unitarian & Free CHristian Church that doesnt count a jot because the U&FCC are apparently not in communion with other Christian Churches. Whatever that means.
He also says the Methodist Church isnt a confessional church and all the 1933 Deed of Union talks about is the historic creeds, and if I am happy acceding to the Apostles Creed t han thats fine by him and the Chair who says the Trinity is just an idea, a theory.
The Super and I also discussed Music in services, introducing some actual liturgical practices. His first church was in Tonbridge Welles which was basically ANglo-Catholic in style: chancel, quitre nave with passage, aisles, transepts. Everything in its proper place. There was even a canopy over the Altar. I forget its name. Hed love to have something more than a five hymn sandwich but, alas, he says Non-cons up north tend to define themselves by what they dont do...and it took him six years to get his current church to have a candle on the altar. Heck knows what theyd do if you put on the big six and had two sanctuary lights.
My Super being a rather good tenor and violinist he wants to really sort out music in the circuit especialy at Hyde but feels he is rather held back by the organist who has been there for 60 years and is more than stuck in her ways. Shes an LRAM and very good...I find her playing rather dull and soul-less. Very...off the page. Mine is a bit more Franck-tastic in terms of tempi but I think a lot more soul full. I also use the Reeds and Mixtures whereas she doesnt. My names been put forward for Assistant Organist-Choirmaster but I'll never play a note as the organist takes her holidays around Sundays and will never do anything with the Choir as they meet at lunchtimes on Tuesdays....
Went to a very interesting lecture at Luther King House this evening about "The New Science and the New Atheism". It wasnt about either, but about transcendentalism - of the Emmery, Dickinson and Whitman kind - and stated that God doesnt exist, God is not a thing, not an object, but an experience, an inward feeling, an indwelling of the soul and cannot be measured imperically. Therefore Dawkins can rant as much as he wants as the God he takes so many pains to destroy doesnt exist appart for the Evangelicals. And this was coming from a Baptist and head of the Northern Baptsist College. The main bulk of hte lecture was from Maralynne Robinson who appears to be a latter-day Emmerson.Fun discussion afterwards. The Evangelicals were so not happy nor were a few lay preachers who were very "this is all right for academia but its too middle class, too high brow, too learned. You cant tell people in the pew God isnt real" etc etc.
