Schalke's Metzelder set to miss Lyon clash

Germany defender Christoph Metzelder is doubtful for Schalke 04's opening Champions League game against French side Lyon on next Tuesday having picked up a groin strain in the 2-0 defeat to Hoffenheim.

The 29-year-old limped off at half-time in Friday night's defeat at Hoffenheim and faces a race against time to be fit for Tuesday's match in France.

"I went off at halftime because I felt a pain in the groin," admitted Metzelder, who signed for Schalke from Real Madrid.

Schalke coach Felix Magath replaced Metzelder on the right side of the Royal Blues' defence with Cameroon teenager Joel Matip, but his side still slumped to defeat.

It is unclear how long Metzelder will be injured for, but he is expected to be out for at least two weeks.

Schalke have lost all of their three German league games so far this season and are second from bottom of the table having lost to Hamburg, Hanover and Hoffenheim.
