It might have been "just Sporting Lisbon", but they qualified for the Champions League and passed the group stage, so they're one of the 16 best teams in Europe, at least on paper. Of course, Bayern's victory was never doubtful, but I wouldn't have expected it to be that high. They could have lost 4-0 and would still have advanced to the quarterfinals, like last season in the UEFA Cup where they scored 5 goals against Anderlecht in the first leg and then lost the second leg 2-1. But they showed good morale against Sporting, gave everything, and even managed to top the already brilliant first leg result. People always praise Barcelona for the amount of goals they score, and say that the Bundesliga is a weak league, but not even Barça managed 12 goals in this last 16, and Lyon weren't much stronger than Sporting in this round.
so well done, bayern, especially considering they won without their "stars" - luca toni and franck ribéry. It's funny how recent results prove that Bayern are better without them. The other teams have become used to Ribéry and learned how to stop him, and Toni has been in some sort of midlife crisis ever since the World Cup. It's not even as if he's changed much since last season; he already was a wardrobe on stilts back then, nearly tripping over his own legs no matter what he was doing, and incredibly egoistical on top of it, but back then he scored goals and distracted us from that. Now, his faults are glaringly obvious, and maybe even more so when he's not playing. In a little "review" I did of the match in my own journal, I described Klose as a little schoolkid doing a little happy dance whenever his big fat bully classmate is sick and not going to school. And, surprise, surprise! Podolski is scoring again! Which I assume is mostly due to the fact that his return to Cologne is sealed and his remaining months in Munich will be (more or less) fun and games.

Bring on the quarterfinals! :)
