SuperCup Bayern vs Schalke - A summary (of sort)

Aug 07, 2010 22:54

We have watched the game, and if not we know where to go to get the score and highlights. So this is my kind of post match summary.

I started the game more nervous than I've been in a long while. As Lahm and Neuer walked out, both supporting an armband, I felt my stomach turning. Neuer is my favorite player from die mannschaft, he is the one who brought me into football and made me stay there. And then there’s Lahm. I cannot deny what an amazing footballer he is no matter who he plays for (and not to mention his brilliant teammates). I thought it would be too weird for me to watch, and too hard to choose who to root for. But then the game started and Bayern became Spain. Now, I know there are a lot of people who dislike Schalke for how they play, and yes I do have to admit that even when being possessive the Bavarians are doing a good job. But still, I hate possessive football. Maybe I am too weird and unaccustomed to the game, since clearly it works for whoever uses it, but I can’t stand to watch it- it bores me and irritate me like a bad itch.

And so 10 minutes in I was ready to declare myself immune to Bayern’s charm. I wasn’t starting to hate them, but I thought it was safe to say they are out of the competition for my favorite club. Not that Schalke was doing a much better job- they were basically standing there and waiting for the ball to maybe magically get to them. Flashbacks from the WC semi-final were slowly creeping into my mind. A couple of good saves by Manu and my ability to recognize Holgi by his weird arm movement were basically the only good things about the first half.

Second half however, was like a whole new game. It’s hard to say who decided to play differently - was it only Schalke or did Bayern realize as well their way is not working? I am leaning towards thinking that it was mainly Schalke who decided to change their way of playing and Bayern just responded to that. As I said, possessive football does work, especially when you have great individual players. But Schalke decided to attack more, and in response Bayern started looking like a German team. Did it make me change my mind about them? No, but it made me feel they deserve to win, especially as unlike Schalke they seemed to be able to play both defense and offense and not one or the other. When Muller finally scored, I was nearly as happy that finally something happened as I was sad to see Manu’s reaction.

All in all, I thought this was a good appetizer for the season, and a good chance for me to test how much into club football I can get. I watched the game with my brother and if it wasn’t for him and the funnies we shared (mostly on Holgi’s expense, sorry love :), I don’t know if I had stuck through it all. But then again, this was not a Bundesliga match and I do have faith in both teams to show me more entertaining football as the season unfolds. I was hoping I will be able to finally set my feeling towards both teams and stop being indecisive, but Schalke did not perform like I needed them to in order for me to able to fully set my heart on them. And as for Bayern, when watching the cup celebrations I realized that as long as they still have Holgi and Lahm I will have no choice but to remain ambivalent.
