Borussia Moenchengladbach 4-1 Hamburger SV

The ‘great escape’ begins here. A 4-1 home win over title chasing Hamburg was just what the doctor ordered and has seen Moenchengladbach climb off the bottom of the table.

Rob Friend opened the scoring after 24 minutes as he converted from a Marko Marin assist from close range. The lead however lasted just four minutes as Mladen Petric grabbed an equaliser for HSV on 29 minutes as the Croatian was in the right place at the right time to score after Piotr Trochowski has mis-hit a shot following a corner.

Just before the interval and the Fohlen were back in front via Tobias Levels. Marin was once again involved as he combined with Alexander Baumjohann to set up the left back.

Eight minutes into the second-half at it was 3-1. A free-kick wasn’t cleared from the penalty area and Daems played the ball cleverly to the better placed Roel Brouwers to fire past Frank Rost.

Gladbach really put the shine on a fine performance with a penalty converted in the 65th minute by Marko Marin after Mathijsen had fouled Matmour in the area.
