It's starting to feel like everyone in this homeless shelter office parallels an Ace Attorney character. My supervisor Dauhly is the Manfred Von Karma, doing anything to get someone a guilty verdict (in this case, a guilty verdict means a non-compliance file that will kick them out of housing). Dauhly wants to get all of our shelter clients who don't comply kicked out ASAP, and all of the compliant clients into subsidized housing ASAP - both of which are so that old people move out and new people move in as frequently as possible, thereby proving on our grant proposals that we house X number of people a year. It's kind of gross.

Kevs, from what I can tell, is the Phoenix Wright of the group, BSing his way through defending all of his clients and keeping them around. I think some of the senior staff know that he won't non-compliance them, because he's frequently given the troublemakers with CORI issues.

Kevs, the most senior of the Case Manager class, is constantly telling me to treat these people like humans, while Dauhly is constantly trying to teach me to treat them like numbers. Dauhly argues that if we don't meet our quotas, we get shut down and don't get to help anyone. Kevs argues that if all we care about is our quotas, then we're so spread out that we're not really helping anyone anyway.

I have my first two clients now: one we shall call O, and one we shall call A. O is great - she does everything we tell her to, and is just a little down on her luck. We are very supportive in keeping her around while she prepares for the outside world. A has no intention of ever leaving the shelter, has been noncompliant, and regularly smokes marijuana around her kids. Dauhly gave me both of these clients and told me to get them out of here as soon as possible.

But I have no interest in being a Manfred Von Karma. For my time here, I plan to don the role of Miles Edgeworth, the prosecutor not interested in all guilty verdicts nor all not-guilty verdicts. I'm interested in the truth; I'm interested in figuring out what my clients true motives are, and acting accordingly. A has only been in my jurisdiction for a week now, and she's already dodged three meetings and smoked in front of me. But her words are sweet and convincing; she swears she is doing all she can to leave shelter (but has actually been here for three years - longer than Dauhly has).

As I am new, they are newly acquired clients, and I refuse to prosecute them under no evidence. If the evidence points to them being innocent, I want to defend them. But I have to remember not to be biased and easily seduced (platonically speaking); I must not fall for their tricks. Other people who will make something of themselves deserve housing too, which they won't get at our shelter if all the spots are taken by mooches who never leave.

I need to get more evidence before I act.
