I don't know why I didn't learn this until after I announced my impending leave, but apparently our Qdoba and the JP Licks down the street had some nice connections back in the day. Our regional manager is married to their manager, and legends say that back in times of yorr this connection meant that the Qdoba kids got free ice cream, and the JP Licks juveniles got free burritos. During one of my shifts a while back, I snuck down to JP's and offered to rekindle the tradition, using free burritos as a peace pipe. This resulted in sixteen dollars worth of ice cream for four dollars. Also, I made some new friends.
Meanwhile, back at the war at home, Nathan and Thomas aren't doing so well financially, so I've been dipping into my savings to help them out with their rent. The three of us are contemplating buying all of our groceries for their apartment, and just sharing everything to guarantee we have food. If push comes to shove, we can always take a vacation from starfish dropoffs, which will bring a couple of pounds of rice and vegetables our way a few nights a week.
To help pay the bills a little bit more, Nathan and I applied for and received permits to play music on the subway. As troubadors, we're not doing that bad; yesterday I played for an hour and received $12, and today I played for an hour and received $14. Hell, that's higher than Qdoba wages.
As odd as it sounds, I'm kind of enjoying helping Nathan and Thomas feed themselves/furnish the apartment (I bought them some dishware as well). Grace and I were very lucky to move into an apartment that was already furnished, and we kind of missed out on this "slowly filling the empty space and working our way up" progression. It feels like a nice experience to have to learn poverty a little more.
Nathan mentioned how his two brothers are well on their ways to their successful careers, but that he didn't regret his life at all - to which I agree. "In about ten years, we'll all have relatively equal amounts of success in what we're going for," he told me, "but we'll have the better memories." And I must agree, paying for food with my guitar and Nathan's harmonica is one sweet memory.
