Spy-like

Me: So, on a scale of one to ten, with ten being totally surprised, how well did I pull of surprising you at your college for Valentine's Day?
Gabby: Um, two. My friend Lizy was a little too obvious. Don't tell her, though.
Lizy: [runs in] Aww, look at you too! I'm so glad we pulled off the surprise. I feel so stealthy and spy-like!

Well, at least the execution was enjoyable. I showed up in her room, donning a matching fedora and black dress shirt (the super tight one from shopping with Cody), and serenaded her via guitar. I played Kina Grannis' "Valentine," Bob Dylan's "Tomorrow Is A Long Time" (the Nickel Creek rendition), and Bloc Party's "This Modern Love." Right now, Gabby's at work, and she encouraged me to wander around the library, where I found this computer.

Being an all-girls college, I stick out like a sore thumb - especially in my getup. I can't go anywhere without being heavily stared at, as if I'm intruding. I keep imagining myself as a bacteria, with all of the white blood cells eying me, debating whether to pounce or not.

To avoid eye contact with people, I've been reading their school newspaper, Mount Holyoke News. Let me just say that this paper is no Wooster Voice. Widows and orphans as far as the eye can see, inconsistent apostrophe leanings, indenting glitches fill the pages. Although I will admit that the writing itself is pretty great. It looks like their staff is much larger than the Voice's, as well; two Managing Editors, lots and lots of copy editors, assistant editors, editorial assistants, and so on. I'm enjoying imagining their ed board meetings like the Voice ed board meetings - cramped in a tiny room that barely held our twelve member editorial staff.

I'll probably write more on this later, but I think I'll go explore some more.
