Last night, I went to one of Josh's improv group's performances. They're called First ImpACT.
Unlike Don't Throw Shoes, they try to keep one skit going the whole show, and they try to aim for more drama based work than comedy (although improv provokes a lot of jokes even still). Last night's show was about a guy who, in part of growing up, had to kill his imaginary friends.
The show had a really awkward character named Princess Sheila, a fantasy version of the main character's current girlfriend. When he met her, he imagined them dating one day, hence a new imaginary friend was born. I had never really thought of imaginary friends like that, and it was interesting to see the Princess Sheila fight against the real Sheila for the main character's attention (unbeknownst to real Sheila, obviously).
They brought props with them, and Josh brought a three-piece lobster suit. We were running kind of late, and parking in Boston is terrible, so we had to run a few blocks from the car to the theater to get there in time. My favorite memory from the evening is definitely sprinting down Mass Ave whilst carrying severed body parts of a giant lobster. We got some strange looks.
The whole show was part of a bigger competition called "Fringe Wars," a sort of battle of the bands for theater. Josh's group was the only improv group that entered - a high risk, high reward move in my opinion (Quoth Josh: "I forgot how much different theater is. I don't like it."). They didn't win, although all of the groups went out for drinks at a local gay bar afterwards. I learned here that everyone in Josh's group had heard of me, and they all call me Dr. Chalk. I was relatively okay with this.
