Bringin' home the Qdoba

Dec 07, 2010 01:11

Since clearly not enough people have visited me this season yet, Colin came from D.C. to hang out with Coffin and me for a week. But, since I work evenings at Qdoba right now, he spends a lot of time at the apartment watching the HIMYM DVDs, which Nathan brought back on his visit.

[late at night]
Me: Honey, I'm home.
Colin: Hey, I'm just watching a few episodes.
Me: Oh, good. You finished Season 2 and moved onto Season 3.
Colin: Hey, I've had nothing to do while you were gone! I spent all day yesterday touring Boston, so I was too tired to go out.
Me: ...huh. I'm really glad that you instinctively hid your own shame before recognizing that I know what this is from the paused frame on the TV.

While Colin is touring by day and sleeping by night in my apartment, I'm spending my mornings interviewing for publishing jobs in the area, and my nights working at Qdoba. It's cool though, I buy him burritos and bring him home food like a good husband.

A few posts ago, I talked about Aldoberto, the man who made me the world's greatest burrito. Since then, we've become friends, and I've spent many days trying every possible combination of ingredients. But I think there may be more to it than ingredients - Aldoberto's cooking skills really impress me.

But what really impresses me about Aldoberto is his attitude. Aldoberto has made it as a chef, but he chooses to work at Qdoba because this place is genuinely what he enjoys doing. On his way to chefdom, he worked in every restaurant chain and fast food chain imaginable, and has since developed the mindset that following your dreams is different from pursuing a life of happiness. With the right mindset, Qdoba can be a place to spend the rest of your life. I don't know if Qdoba specifically is the place for me, but the attitude of his is something I've been hoping to achieve for some time now.

On a sort of irrelevant note, having worked in so many establishments has made him very well-informed of fast food chains, and he's mentioned several reasons why Qdoba, as well as Taco Bell, is more sanitary than any given Applebees. I'm both impressed with Qdoba and horrified at Applebees.

Live, laugh, love,
Chalkey
