Steph expressed [perhaps at first begrudging] interest in playing video games with me, and so we played an NES classic: Super Mario Bros. Unfortunately, it's been a while since I last played (read: the last time I had the Wii, which was during my last session of exams), and I was a little rusty. That, combined with giving Steph the Wii-mote and using a Gamecube controller to play an NES game, led to Steph playing better than I did, despite both Grace and me swearing that I used to be able to beat this game in under an hour.
At first I wasn't sure whether Steph just liked to screw with me or if she clearly saw no evidence of such, but she acted like she was in utter disbelief that I could ever beat Super Mario Bros. Aggravated, I spent a good amount of time struggling in World 8-1. Eventually it was pretty obvious that she thought it was funny to screw with me, so I didn't really get past World 8-2.
Sometimes, when gamers are little, they feel lucky to get any girls at all. So when a girl is a hindrance to games, you feel conflicted. Hilariously so. You laugh at yourself for even having to think of choosing between a human and a game. But you still think about it. And then you laugh at yourself again. And then, eventually, you put the controller down.
...but as soon as they leave, you pick it back up again and beat Super Mario Bros. in a half hour and feel damn good.
Live, laugh, love,
Chalkey
