Enter Josh

(Er, more like enter Chalkey into Josh's life, but close enough.)

Kids, this is the story of how I met Josh, the man I started living with in the fall of 2010.

Grace and I were looking for apartments for a while now, and we had two real estate agents we were using to look around. The first was named Mark, and he was a decently stand up guy. Not much to say, good or bad, regarding his work or the apartments he showed us - very run of the mill. Then there was Victor. Or, has he pronounces his name, Veektor.

Grace: It says his name is Victor. I'm going to call him and ask him to show us some apartments tomorrow.
Me: Teehee. "Thees ees Veektor!"
Grace: Stop it, you're going to make me laugh on the phone!
Veektor: Hello. Thees ees Veektor.
Grace: Oh, no.

Thanks to a well timed giggle loop, the two of us were snickering the whole time Veektor showed us around. Thanks to Mark, however, we also had an idea of what apartments are high quality or low quality, overpriced or underpriced. So when Veektor tried to pull one over on us, we snickered at that too. I can't imagine what he was thinking, but I do feel sorry for whatever insecurities we caused him.

At some point, he showed us an apartment in Somerville, a Boston outskirt analogous to the way Huntington woods is a Detroit outskirt. He struggled with the lock initially, and couldn't get the door open. After a few minutes of fidgeting, he went around to the back door and, failing that, returned to try again. This went on a for a bit.

Eventually, someone opens the door. Veektor tried to explain to the seemingly befuddled young man that we were here to see the apartment he was moving out of, to which he replied "I'm not moving out." Grace and I started to smirk again, causing Veektor to run off to call his manager and ask what was going on.

Eventually, I apologized for the confusion, to which the man replied "Yeah, I don't know what's going on. I told my landlord I was going to find two roommates on my own! I don't need a real estate agent."

Grace and I look at each other, then back at him, then back at each other. "We're two roommates looking for a place."

The young man gives us a look like we fell from the sky. Now welcomed inside, he introduced himself as Josh. It was a cute little place with very respectably sized bedrooms, huge closets, individually heated rooms and a relatively clean atmosphere. Oh, and when his two roommates left Josh would get all the furniture since one was going home and the other was touring the country on a poetry tour. Josh liked having common rooms dignified with cleanliness but rooms up to the choice of the user. He also liked Juno, Coupling, Life Acquatic, Parappa the Rapper 2 and Garden State from what I could see by quickly glancing at his movies. He was a catch.

And then he told us his apartment was $550 a month, all utilities included. Apparently, his place hasn't been on the market in a few years, and because his landlord likes them a decent amount he never really raised the rent. So if we moved in with him, we realized, we'd be all around getting a steal.

Veektor returned, finally realizing he was meant to show us the apartment exactly one floor above Josh's. The floorplan was an identical layout, with some mess left behind by the previous owner. Veektor assured us that we wouldn't find a better deal than this place: $700 a month with no utilities included. Grace and I snickered again. That was the last time we saw Veektor.

A few days later, we met up with Josh for dinner to get to know each other, and a few days ago we all decided we were going to live together. Grace and I like Josh, Josh likes us, and he needs to fill those two spots just as much as we could really use this bargain of a dream home.

A match that fell from the sky.

until next time,
Chalkey
