Elphaba sat on the edge of her bed, looking at four words that meant far more things than four little words should ever mean.
She'd sent a letter to her father after the receiving the note that she'd never had a sister. And now, that letter was in her hands. Four words were stamped on the still-sealed envelope: "Undeliverable - World Not Found". Elphaba continued to sit, turning the envelope over in her hand. She did not cry, no. She was thinking of it in terms of losing her father, and that only filled her with a sense of cold, empty relief. When she thought of all of Oz, the people and Animals and everything that she'd never get a chance to see, that made her sad.
And when she finally again thought of the loss of her sister, that's when she started to silently weep. There was no dramatic smashing of things with her magic, no wailing, no gnashing of her teeth.
She set down the letter next to her on her bed, and reached beneath her pillow. Her fingers hit against the familiar cool glass, and she pulled out the green bottle that she kept hidden there. She clutched it to her chest with both hands. This bottle, her last relic of her mother, and Elphaba herself were all that was left of the true Oz. She tried not to think of that, but she found herself resolving to take up that burden, to be strong in the face of this all.
In a moment, at least. For now, she'd sit here, thinking of what memories she had of that merry old land of Oz.
