Whiggin' Out

The Afghan Whigs' new album In Spades will be released May 5.
They've already put out a surreal video for the song Demon in Profile, and now they're insisting upon arousing us with another new tune, entitled, Arabian Heights.
I didn't get it the first time I listened to Arabian Heights, but after a few more bites at the apple, I really dig it. It's cliche to say "it sounds like ..." followed by naming a particular band or genre, but the opening reminds me of Simple Minds during their industrial experimentations.
However, the bulk of the song evokes Smashing Pumpkins during the Gish album particularly with the driving percussion.
I'm not saying the Whigs are being derivative --- because they're definitely not.
This song just happens to evoke happy memories of other bands I enjoy, that's all.

It's kind of like when a chick is watching a film starring Michael Fassbender and she begins to think, "Hey, Fassbender reminds me of the didisaythat dude."
