I'm telling you, have them write their own fanfic!

I remember one of the things we did in Lit Writing in high school was a poetry unit (forms, functions, etc.)...we were required to read several different types of poetry forms, write our own using given forms, etc.

A descriptive essay on one particular object. I concentrated on my guitar and had to describe every little detail on the thing. It was a great way to make us use tons of adjectives and expand our vocabularies.

One of my favorites was a collaborative writing project in Sophomore Lit. Totally fictional but we got credit for it in both English and Biology because it had to have some sort of biology research/factoids in it. I remember, it was Bobby, Tim, and I. We wrote this bizarre underwater science-fiction fantasy with an alien research crew who comes to earth and can't make heads or tails of the bizarre life it encounters in the depths.

Freshmen year we watched lots of the School House Rock grammar videos. That's what I remember.

We books I primarily remember reading and doing projects with are The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Great Gatsby and Jane Eyre.

If I think of other things, I'll let you know.

I remember a ton of Mark Twain and some Shakespeare thrown in. How about rewriting a scene from a famous play in normal everyday language like we would say things today. It's a great way to see if they're understanding any of that old talk stuff.
