Am watching Merlin. What does this show have against the color tangerine? In every episode I've seen thus far, the baddie has worn a flowy, tangerine cloak. If you're a girl, it's crushed velvet.
Edit: I think watching this show will frustrate me, but I'm invested now, so I guess I'll keep watching. Some things about the show intrigue me, particularly the fact that Guinevere is a servant, and Morgana *isn't* evil, she's actually kind of awesome. But I've seen three episodes, and already it's fallen into a pattern: Some dude (or girl) decides he wants to kill Arthur, using a complicated magical plan. Merlin discovers said plan by poking about where he shouldn't. Merlin is prevented from doing anything until the last second, because no one can know he's magical.
But even aside from this formula, the writers all too often make the characters kind of stupid in order to prolong the conflict. For example, in episode 2 (spoilers spoilers spoilers! ... obviously) the plot is, for reasons which are not explained, some dude decides to kill Arthur in a tournament, using a magical shield with snakes that come to life. Merlin and the court physician discover this, convince Arthur to accuse the guy in front of the king, and are going to bring another knight, who was almost killed by the snakes, as evidence. They also have a severed snake head from the shield. The scene plays out like this:
King: This is preposterous! Do you have any evidence?
Arthur: Yes, the guy who was attacked! Who... isn't here.
Merlin: He's dead.
King: Why are you wasting my time? Clearly you made these things up.
Merlin: But... isn't it convenient that he's dead? Of a snake bite? Another one, I mean? And where the hell did I get this giant snake head, then?
King: Whatever, serf.
Merlin: Oh, fuck you all.
And then there's the fact that, when Merlin got the severed snake head, he could have stayed like two seconds longer to CUT OFF THE OTHER SNAKES, and then there would no longer be a problem. But nooooo.
But overall I like it. I particularly enjoy the completely inaccurate clothing and hairstyles, but since it's legend, I suppose it's foolish to point at anything and call it inaccurate, anyway.
