Slow going

Sep 30, 2009 20:20

Hello you lovely peoples you. I felt like aimlessly chatting in the hopes that it will make me write quicker, or something. That's because work on Vicky's interlude is going very slowly, and I've been trying to peg down why. I've written only 88 slides, which is about 2 pages of my outline, and is only the start of the adventure really.  Last night I wrote only 10 slides, which is rubbish for about two hours work.  I think I've figured it out though.

Firstly, I'm in no hurry to get this out, even though I do want to share this and get back to the legacy. It's only two weeks since I last published something, and I found myself getting worked up about how long it was taking me to get anywhere with the game or writing a few months ago. Since then, I've made myself relax about it and enjoy what I'm doing.

Secondly, I'm doing this arse about face compared to how I normally work. Although I do plan what I'm going to be doing with a scene, right down to the dialogue occasionally, I don't normally start writing the captions until I've got the pictures in front of me. This is such a big story, with lots of things that have to happen, I'm writing a shooting script so I don't have to keep going back into the game to reshoot things. I will be revisiting the words, but it is odd not to have the pictures to act as prompts when I need them.

Thirdly, the past two days I've been writing other people's characters. It has been a lot of fun, but it's far more time consuming than writing my own characters. Partly that's because, one of the obstacles I have to overcome, is taking often very modern characters and writing them so that they are true to their characters, but still fit into my world.  I find writing Indy interacting with one of my Victorians very difficult, because Indy isn't at all Victorian, but if I had him being totally himself, he would stick out like a sore thumb and the scenes wouldn't work.  I can relax a bit and have him be more himself if he is talking to my simself, because I write the simelves as being more modern, but with the legacy sims?  No way.  So I try to get his voice right, but add a bit of restraint, as if he's been told to be on his best behaviour by a certain brunette simself he keeps marrying.

The other thing with writing other people's characters is that I like to read past chapters where they have appeared to help me get the tone of their voice, and their speech patterns  right.  Or as close as I can get them anyway.  While huge amounts of fun, it is very time consuming.

Fourthly, I've been doing a bit of building round Vicky's office, so that it looks like it is on a busy street, like so:

This is that part of the city now.  I think it really is starting to come together, and I might package up one of the dummy lots I made yesterday to add to the real neighbourhood.

The big lot next to Vicky's office will be showing up in the legacy, and although it's only half finished at the moment (it's as finished as I need it to be for the interlude, apart from a little set dressing), I did play test it in the real neighbourhood on Sunday, by sending Carmen to buy her wedding dress there.  For any of you who have read my drabble for Monday's sim_spiration , I have the pictures of what happened to inspire it too.

I normally get evil witches turning up, so I took this as a good sign.

Look, pretty.

The inspiration for the roof lines came from Hertford:

This is St Andrew Street.  I wasn't trying to recreate it, but rather took the idea of having a mishmash of styles and ages all butting up next to each other, and made it work in the Sims.

Anyway, Johnny's (JWoodsBuzz)'s simself was on the lot, and, well, he pranked the wrong people.

First Larch...

Then Charles.

It's really not a good idea to piss Charles off.  He's the most cantankerous of all the gen 3 boys, more so than Henry even.  I like to think that's because Henry is very focussed on what he is mad at. whereas Charles doesn't care, and is actually a sweetie when he's happy.

Look at that grr face.

*SHOVE*

*GRRRRR*

"Dude looks pissed."

Dude is pissed Akor.

Johnny, his face glitched thusly, took cover in the shoe shop.

Didn't deter Charles one bit.

Charles REALLY didn't like being hit back.

For the next few sim hours, Charles chased Johnny round the shoe shop, poking, shoving and slapping him.  Sometimes they got a bit close to the other shoppers, but that didn't stop them.

What did, was Johnny leaving.

I did laugh.

Anyway I want to get a comment for Rose done tonight, as well as a bit more writing, so I'm going to go now.  Hope you're all ok.
