Character meme: Bethany Howard

Jun 07, 2012 22:45

I've not forgotten Marielle, but I promised Cait I'd post one for Bethany, if she did one for Ezra, so here you go.

Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is she heavyset, thin, short, rangy?
She’s 5’1” and very petite, but perfectly proportioned.

2. How old is she?
Like with everyone I’ve answered one of these on, you’ll see her from birth to death, but at the moment in game, she’s 23 and in the story, she’s 22.

3. Describe her posture. Does she carry herself well or does she slouch?
She holds herself very well. Her corset and bodice mean that she has to hold herself straight anyway, add to that her education at the Acadamie where she was taught proper deportment, and you can see why she carries herself well.

4. How is her health? Is she fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?
She’s generally a well person, although she does have a tendency towards ear infections. She’s not that fit, although she will get fitter living in the country and all the walking and riding that will involve.

5. How does she move? Is she clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?
She’s very graceful and her movements are very fluid.

6. How attractive is this character physically? How does she perceive herself in the mirror?
She thinks she’s nothing special, but she’s wrong. She’s beautiful, and she also has a natural radiance that makes her even more beautiful.

7. Describe her complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred?
Very dark and clear. She had the odd break out when she was in her teens, but nothing major.

8. Describe her hair: color, texture, style.
Her hair is dark brown and it has a wave to it that she has to tame each day before she ties it in the loose plait she favours. Unlike her sister, she tries not to overdo it with the curling tongs.

9. What color are her eyes?
Bright green. She actually got them from her father, but since they’re also the same colour as her sister and grandmother’s, she thinks she got them from her mother’s side of the family. She won’t realise the truth until she meets him.

10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features?
She’s the only one of Alexandra’s children who didn’t inherit the Legacy Brow from her.

11. What are her chief tension centers?
Her back.

12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does she have six of the same suit?
She favours deep, rich colours, and her favourite colour is burgundy. Her clothes are stylish, but not over adorned. She prefers embroidery to oodles of ruffles and spangles.

13. Do her clothes fit well? Does she seem comfortable in them?
Her clothes are all made for her and to her measurements so they fit her perfectly. Also, because she is perfectly proportioned, they look very good on her. It’s something that her sister is very jealous of actually. She is comfortable in them.

14. Does she dress the same on the job as she does in her free time? If not, what are the differences?
She doesn’t work. If she’s around the village helping out, then she’s in the same clothes she wears at home, unless they’re not suitable. In that case, she’ll wear what is appropriate.
15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando?
Combinations, silk in summer and a silk/wool mix in winter.

Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?
She has a very melodic voice. It’s not high pitched, but it is slightly higher than what I consider medium pitched.

2. How does she normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does she talk easily, or does she hesitate?
She has a fairly soft voice (a lady never raises her voice), and she talks very evenly. She talks easily and has a natural knack for knowing what to say. She does hesitate at times, but it’s not a normal occurrence.

3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?
She has an upper class English accent.

4. What language/s does she speak, and with how much fluency?
Simlish and SimFrench.

5. Does she switch languages or dialects in certain situations?
No.

6. Is she a good impromptu speaker, or does she have to think about her words?
She’s a very good impromptu speaker. She has a real knack for seeing to the heart of a situation and knowing exactly what to say and how to act. She does think about her words, but she thinks about them very fast.

7. Is she eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?
She’s very eloquent. The only time that will change is if she is thrown by the situation, but even then, she will soon regain her composure and her eloquence.

Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is she book-smart or street-smart?
She is pretty intelligent, and is held back by the expectations of the society she lives in. However, she doesn’t feel as if she is missing out on anything. She is very happy with her life and how it has turned out, especially given how it could have done.
She has street smarts of a kind: she could give her aunt Vicky a run for her money with regards to her insight, but she uses it in a completely different way to Vicky. Whereas Vicky is more conscious of the baser side of human nature, Bethany isn’t. She uses that insight to make people feel comfortable, not see their secrets.

2. Does she think on her feet, or does she need time to deliberate?
She thinks on her feet and she’s very good at it.

3. Describe the character's thought process. Is she more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?
She’s very intuitive and is also practical.

4. What kind of education has the character had?
Educated by her mother and nanny at home, before being educated by a governess. At eighteen she left home to attend the Acadamie finishing school in Simbridge.

5. What are her areas of expertise? What, if anything, is she interested in learning more about?
I don’t think I can say she has an area of expertise as such. She can turn her hand to most things, and will always give something a go.

6. Is she an introvert or an extrovert?
Extrovert to a certain extent. Her birth means that she is a little wary of what people are thinking around her, and how they’re going to react to her, but she wins people over very easily and likes being around people.

7. Describe the character's temperament. Is she even-tempered or does she have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?
She’s even tempered, normally very cheerful, but can be prone to melancholy and bouts of insecurity. Luckily, her wonderful husband is very good at reassuring her and putting her in a better mood.

8. How does she respond to new people or situations? Is she suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?
She’s always slightly suspicious, because of the fact she’s illegitimate, and it’s very obvious she is. However because she likes being around people, she often responds with enthusiasm.

9. Is she more likely to act, or to react?
Act.

10. Which is her default: fight or flight?
Flight now, but fight when she was younger. As she gets older, it’ll probably go to fight again.

11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does she appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?
She likes jokes, and has rather a wicked sense of humour. It’s the one time she actually lets the pain and anger she feels towards certain people come out. As such she can have quite a scathing wit when she wants to. However, there are few people who see this from her. The most noticeable person is Ezra, whom she feels perfectly comfortable around, and who knows nearly all her secrets.

12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does she deal with them?
No.

13. What moments in this character's life have defined her as a person?
Realising that she and Christopher weren’t Antony’s children. Meeting Ezra. Becoming engaged to Ezra. Standing up to Sarah Jane when she gets home from the Acadamie. Marrying Ezra.

14. What does she fear?
Being a disappointment to her parents. Also, in the deepest part of her soul she fears that Ezra will tire of society’s censure towards her and find someone else. Her head tells her that is as likely to happen as the world being taken over by giant spiders, but she’s lived her entire life being told that she is wrong and that’s a hard thing to shake.

15. What are her hopes or aspirations?
She wants to live her life with the man she loves and have a large family.

16. What is something she doesn't want anyone to find out about her?
Deep down, she not only doesn’t blame Sarah Jane for the things she says or how she feels about her, she thinks she’s right.

Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with her parents.
She’s not met her biological father, and there’ll be no relationship there when she does.
She’s very close to both Alexandra and Anthony, thinking of Anthony as her real father.

2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?
She is really close to her twin Christopher. After all, he’s the only one who knows what it’s like to be illegitimate and to have everyone talk about him behind his back. They’ve helped each other through the gossip and the stares.
She’s also close to David, and pretty close to Mickey. She’s working at being closer to Zane, since he joined the family not long before she left for Simbridge, so she didn’t really get to know him then.
She’s not very close to Sarah Jane at all, because of how much Sarah Jane resents her. She’s worked at it, and tried to get closer to her, but Sarah Jane won’t have any of it. It’s something that saddens Bethany, but she’s trying to accept it. She gets better at accepting it after the row she has when she moves home after finishing school.

3. Are there other blood relatives to whom she is close? Are there ones she can't stand?
She’s pretty close to Bertie, Stuart and Celestia. She also spent a lot of time with Andrew and Peter when she was younger.

4. Are there other, unrelated people whom she considers part of her family? What are her relationships with them?
She became good friends with Azula Fitzhugh, during her final year at Simbridge, when Celly introduced them.

5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?
Her brother Christopher as a child, but you can add her husband Ezra later.

6. Does she have other close friends?
Not really. She does make friends easily, and has lots of friends. but there’s always the question of her parentage that both stops people getting close to her, and stops her from letting them too.

7. Does she make friends easily, or does she have trouble getting along with people?
She gets along with people very well and makes friends easily. As I say above, she is good at winning people over. It’s a shame that there is always an invisible barrier that stops her from having lots of close friends.

8. Which does she consider more important: family or friends?
Family.

9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has she been married more than once?
In story, she’s betrothed to Ezra Howard. In game, they’re married. This will be her only marriage.

10. Is she currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse?
No. Ezra is her soul mate and there is no other man she would look at.

11. Who was her first crush? Who is her latest?
Ezra and Ezra.

12. What does she look for in a romantic partner?
Ezra. Ok, honestly, she’s always wanted someone who will love her and accept her, in spite of what society says about her.

13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does she relate to them? If no, does she want any?
In game, she’s currently expecting her first child. I expect there to be lots more to follow.

14. Does she have any rivals or enemies?
No. Sarah Jane may think that she’s her rival, but Bethany doesn’t see her as such.

15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does she fall on the Kinsey scale?
Straight.

16. How does she feel about sex? How important is it to her?
She enjoys it a LOT. Her mother-in-law gave her an advice pamphlet about two months before her wedding, that painted a very unflattering picture of sex. However, her mother told her not to take any notice of it, and now, having been married for six months and having rather thoroughly explored her sexuality with Ezra, she wonders how she could have believed a word of it anyway. It’s become very important to her.

17. What are her turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?
I think nearly everything about Ezra turns her on, but if she had to pin it down to a few things, then it’d be his grey eyes, his hands and his lips.

Beliefs
1. Do you know your character's astrological (zodiac of choice) sign? How well does she fit type?
She’s a Taurus. I think it fits to a certain degree, but isn’t brilliant. Like all my characters, I had no choice in it.

2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in her life?
She’s a member of the equivalent to the CofE, but because of her birth she has a problem with a lot of the strong rhetoric that has come out of the church.

3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?
She’s a good person, with strong morals. They manifest in her kindness. The only time I can think that she would compromise them, is if it would help or save someone she loved. That makes less sense outside of my head.

4. How does she regard beliefs that differ from hers? Is she tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?
Depends what the belief is. If it’s that all illegitimate children and their mothers will burn in hell for all eternity, and should be ostracised on this earth, then she’s naturally going to be as intolerant back as the person is towards her. There are a couple more which would also get her back up, but on the whole she’s tolerant and lets people live as they wish and believe what they want.

5. What prejudices does she hold? Are they irrational or does she have a good reason for them?
I don’t think she’s prejudiced at all.

Daily Life
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is she rich, poor, comfortable, in debt?
She’s rich. Her father is a member of the landed gentry, and her husband comes from a very rich family in Simdon.

2. What is her social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected her?
Towards the upper part of the middle class now that she’s married. She was lower upper beforehand because of Anthony.

3. Where does she live? House, apartment, trailer? Is her home her castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does she share it with others?
She currently lives in a manor on the outskirts of Regalton, that is built in the Regancy style, even though it’s a new building. Ezra had it built from plans of his family home in Simdon. Before that she lived in the VPLS, a private house in Simbridge, and before that a boarding house that is attached to the finishing school. Her formative years were spent in her father’s townhouse in Simdon.

4. Besides the basic necessities, what does she spend her money on?
Writing materials and books mainly. Also accessories and material for finishing dresses and embroidering garments.

5. What does she do for a living? Is she good at it? Does she enjoy it, or would she rather be doing something else?
She doesn’t work, but she does fill her time with charity works, good deeds and all the things a lady was expected to do.

6. What are her interests or hobbies? How does she spend her free time?
She’s a keen writer, preferring poetry to prose, but enjoying both. She’s also good at baking, and tries her best at embroidery. She’s not as good as she’d like to be, but she works at it. Since her marriage, she’s started learning to ride, so that she can spend time with Ezra, who loves riding.

7. What are her eating habits? Does she skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods?
She’s not keen on sweet foods, so although she is good at baking, she rarely eats the cakes she cooks. Speaking of cakes, the first year that both Bethany and Sophia lived in the village, everyone ended up with two Christmas cakes to eat, since both gave them as presents in the hampers they prepared. The two of them enjoyed a good laugh over that, and now Sophia bakes mince pies and savoury pastries as part of her hamper, leaving the Christmas cake and figgy pudding to Bethany.
She eats regular meals, but doesn’t really have a good appetite. She eats her fill, but it’s not a lot.

Associations
Which of the following do you associate with the character, or which is her favorite:

1. Color? Burgundy
2. Smell? Cinnamon
3. Time of day? Evening
4. Season? Summer
5. Book? She’ll read most things, but I don’t think she has a favourite.
6. Music? Liszt Liebestraum no 3. As for modern songs I associate with her, “Just The Way You Are” but the Boyce Avenue version fits perfectly.
7. Place? The country. Rolling hills and secluded copses.
8. Substance? Ink
9. Plant? Lilies.
10. Animal? I can’t actually think of one.
