This is what Happened! I Fuckin hate drunk drivers!
A Farmington Hills family's routine trip to the dentist Tuesday afternoon ended in tragedy when a speeding SUV with a drunken driver behind the wheel smashed into the car, killing a woman and her two children, police said.
The accident occurred at 3:30 p.m. in Farmington Hills on 12 Mile, just east of Orchard Lake Road, Farmington Hills police said.
As the woman, 49, and her two sons waited to turn left into a dentist's parking lot, a red GMC Yukon slammed into the back of their black Honda Accord, killing them all.
"It's one of the worst fatalities we've had in years," Farmington Hills Police Chief William Dwyer said. "It's a total tragedy when you have a mother taking her children to the dentist. The heart goes out to the entire family."
Rabbi Tamara Kolton of the Birmingham Temple in Farmington Hills, confirmed that the woman is Judith Weinstein. Her sons are Alex, a seventh grader and Sam, a fourth grader.
"They're such a tight-knit family," she said of the family, which included Gary Weinstein, who was not with his wife and sons. "We loved them."
Judith Weinstein and Alex , who was in the front passenger seat, died at the scene, police said. Sam was ejected about 20 feet from the car, landing in a driveway.
Dwyer said there were no brake marks on the roadway to indicate that the driver of the SUV ever saw the Honda or tried to stop before crashing into the family's vehicle.
Dwyer said the speed limit on 12 Mile in Farmington Hills is 45 m.p.h.
Asked if the man was speeding, Dwyer said, "It appears that he was."
The man's blood-alcohol level was in excess of 0.20, Dwyer said.
he level at which someone can be convicted of drunken driving in Michigan is 0.08.
"He was legally drunk. He was over double the limit," Dwyer said. "It may be much higher."
Employees of the Farmington Hills Inn, an assisted-living facility for senior citizens, rushed to aid the boy after hearing the crash.
Wendy Wolski, 30, followed her boss, Julie Norman, the inn's marketing director, up a hill where they saw the boy.
"It looked like a surreal situation," Wolski said. "I thought immediately he was gone."
The boy was lying on the ground with one shoe off, his head was resting left-side down.
"The child was just bloody, gruesome," she said. "We were saying 'Hello, what's your name?' He was unresponsive."
Another employee ran up with a blanket as they tried to make him comfortable, she said. Norman covered the boy with the blanket.
Nearby, smoke was coming from the vehicles and onlookers gathered, Wolski said.
She said the car was so badly damaged "it looked nothing like a car," but she could see at least two people inside.
"I was yelling at the bystanders to get away," Wolski said.
Sam was taken to Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak where he was pronounced dead, Dwyer said. He said Gary Weinstein, was at the hospital.
The three family members were wearing seat belts, said Dwyer.
After slamming into the family's car, the driver of the SUV hit a Jaguar and a Ford Escort wagon before rolling over.
The SUV driver was taken to Beaumont Hospital and is in serious condition, Dwyer said.
