I decided to take today off because I've been running around like the proverbial chicken, and when I was in the shower (at noon, holla) I for some reason decided to make my grandmother's biscuit recipe, which had always intimidated me because there's such an air of mystery surrounding biscuits. (Uh, among people I know.) Turns out it's pretty easy! I like them a lot, though I'm not sure if that's just because I made them myself. My grandma was an old southern lady and so her recipe uses shortening and 3 tablespoons of baking powder, no baking soda or butter. They taste kinda neutral, yet delicious in a bready way. And I don't normally like flaky biscuits, but these puffed up a good bit once I cut them thick enough. So I might try the Mark Bittman version (3 tbs baking powder, 1tbs baking soda, 1 cup butter, buttermilk) for variety, but I dunno, it's hard to beat gramma biscuits, right?
