needs more: witty dialogue a world that is already fleshed out (as in the author has a history created for the world that the reader can see) as in history that exists behind the scenes
need less: stupid references to "real-life" like "How many elves does it take to light a candle" or things like that
On the fence about: characters named after obscure religious concepts (the character named Dukkha in the chronicles of Thomas Covenant for example)
realistic conflicts of morality, going far beyond the simplicity of good and band inherent in many fantasy novels. i'm sure that's something you could pull off :-P
Thanks, you guys. You have succeeded in assuring me that I'm on the right track. I am working very hard on building a world- the comment that Dino posted on the other entry will come true, by the way, I have always wanted to make something Steampunk, and look forward to having at least a couple stories take place in the clockwork empire. I'm all about the real moral conflicts and the witty dialogue, and I've always been annoyed at books that use expressions and situations that wouldn't have been there. In fact, objects named for people from other worlds (sandwiches) or just plain don't work (earth) piss me off royally. Of course, I'm a purist, and have asked since I was a child, "Why are these aliens speaking English?" and would likely have to have an entirely new language to be satisfied.
And you don't have to worry, Boo- there will almost definitely be vampires, or some analogue thereof.
Anyway, I still look for answers and suggestions. So keep them rolling in!
