In the chill of the night I can feel my heart racing
As I run towards the light that seems so far away
Wandering forever in the darkest of shadows
Wondering if I will ever see you again

Well, everybody, it's been a bit. I'm not doing this to catch up, really. I had an idea recently, and wanted to get it down a little bit- get this metaphorical ball rolling.

A long time ago, I had a character idea. A guy by the name of Red. Some of you may even remember something about him, but I doubt it. He was a warrior-type, as all of my characters are. Of course, he had some knowledge of magic, but a strange variety thereof- what I originally called blood magic, but which I now think I need to rename, as it sounds inadequate and trite. Basically, it was sorcery that was manifested by means of bodily harm to the sorceror. So, say Red needed to influence the roll of a die, he'd have somebody step on his foot as he rolled. If he wanted to unlock a door, he'd cut his palm and place it over the lock. If he wanted to bring somebody back from the dead, he himself would have to die.

I want to bring Red back, for one. He was nifty. I might have to tone him down a little bit. Originally, he was heavily anachronistic- he wore steel-toed boots and a leather trenchcoat in a medieval-fantasy setting, and he was armed with a chainsaw (There is a fun, if mildly gory, sequence floating around my head, regarding how he keeps it fueled). The other part of him was that he didn't have a face- he had a head and hair and eyes and ears, but no nose or mouth, just a plane of skin, like his cheeks joined in the middle. I think I'll have to scrap this part- it seems too much. And it'd be hard to identify with a character with that much going on.

The other thing is, a while ago, Jessica told me that one of the things that gets her reading, and keeps her reading, is a thorough, consistent world. So I thought on this, realized it would be GREAT to build a world. Tremendous fun! Cultures and religions and geography and economy and all of it. There would be weather patterns, with a section of a continent getting monsoons, and desert basins and icy wastelands. Have monasteries with spiritual nihilists, and have debates between theists and atheists. There's even room for a steampunk empire to the far west, whose "gear magic" is considered a frightening blasphemy in feudal areas, and alternatively deific and demonic in the realm of the tribes. Over years, you could follow the spread of memes!

And it occurred to me- you have another character who could work in this setting. That made-from-scratch man. And there are bound to be others. Put them all in the same world. Different places and times and purposes, let them share a world. The immortal priest could live there. The demon-spawn who looks for the throne of a dying god. The winged woman. All of them.

Anyway, I was way tired a while ago. But I got some things out of my head, so I'm gonna try to get some sleep. Tell me what you think, dammit!

Later,
N
