Vicarious rock'roll

Caught last night’s primetime telecast of Rockstar: INXS. It’s a fun watch; of course with its reality TV format, it also tries to insert snippets of drama wherever possible, but I think it’s all forgivable.

Thus, my slow evening’s highlight was watching the show and seeing the wannabe-rockstars (no offense meant) cover some pre-selected rock songs

hi candice! just wanted to agree with your points up there, and to add a couple more things.

- Be on time. ALWAYS. for everything. gigs, meetings, practice, whatever. it shows you're professional, and respectful of other peoples' time. If you have to be late, call ahead and be honest about how much longer it will take for you to get to your appointment.

- Be nice to your fans. They are the reason you have a career. If you have one. :) and a little niceness is never forgotten by fans. It goes a long long long way.

It's funny I don't watch Rockstar INXS cause the whole concept of Rock. For me, rock music is more than just talent and image and fame. it's about performing your own songs so I can't help but feel that if the contestants really ARE rock artists to the core, they should be creating and performing their own rock songs, rather than doing covers and auditioning to sing another bands' songs.

Tapos nakakagulat ng music scene ngayon kasi, parang bumaliktad ang mundo from since *ahem* we were active in it (i'm a fan in absentia just like you). my boyfriend's band is good, but they have the most minimum exposure, about a gig a month lang siguro cause they're all working. pero hello, you can get their songs on the internet and fiestamundo.com is promoting them, they've been on MTV and Breakfast and will be on MTV again, tapos VIVA ang nanliligaw sa kanila na mag-sign. Parang dati pahirapan to get a contract, much less get on MTV, pero ngayon, sila na mismo ang lumalapit. Ang galing no? If only for this alone, that some talented nobodies can have so many opportunities available to them, plus the fact that Hale has the highest sales daw in Tower Records for the past couple of weeks na, yes, beating all the foreign artists, says to me that the local scene is definitely booming. :) exciting no? pero sabi ko sa boyfriend ko wag sa viva mag-sign. hehehe...

You're right. You don't watch the show for a pure "rock" angle. It still is a talent contest, more than anything. I like seeing what kind of songs get selected to be used, and after 3 years of AI, it's nice to hear another genre of songs getting a bit of mainstream exposure (fine, I'm a sell-out). But more than that, even if they are covers, I've always been intrigued by how any performer transforms a song into his own, and not just works out a plakado version. (Oh, and performing own songs is always a premium for me.)

In any case, it's entertainment on TV. ;)
