A little bird recently started to build a nest outside the window in of the laundry room/hallway going to my room. Unfortunately, he chose to try to build it in that little opening/vent that is on the outside of houses for dryers. One of the little flaps on the dryer vent thing had fallen off a while ago, so there was a perfect sized opening for the little bird to fly into.
He started this about 2 weeks ago. I first heard this scratching noise in the pipe thing going from the dryer to the vent outside. It stopped, and I didn't hear it again, so I figured it was just wind or something. Then I started hearing it more frequently over the last week. And then yesterday morning, when looking out the window I saw this little tiny bird shoot by the window, followed by the scratching noise in the pipe thing. My family was still sleeping, so I kept it to myself, meaning to call and tell them from work. I forgot, and when I came home and walked onto the porch, I saw all this moss and grass and twigs on the porch below the vent - the remains of this poor bird's hard work! This morning, Suz turned the dryer on, and right as she did it she remembered the bird and ran to the window... All I heard was "OH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" haha. The bird was fine, but the nest came flying out of the vent... again.
Before Jim was able to fix the missing flap on the vent, the stupid bird had, yet again, started his futile attempt at building a nest... Poor thing. Haha. The dryer was turned on, nest #500million went flying, and Jim fixed the vent.
I was hoping to get some pictures, but the parents fixed it up before I could. It is a very cute and sad tale... I wouldn't have minded having lil baby birds outside the window, but the parents decided being able to use the dryer was more important than observing birds and eggs and babies growing up. :(
