David Cameron's been at it again. Spouting utter bullshit as per usual - this time about "The Enemies of Enterprise". While I'd love to sit and idly make Star Trek jokes, it's much more serious than that, because these shadowy enemies are none other than his good old punching bag, the public sector workers. To hear him talk, you'd think civil servants had nothing else to do except make life difficult for people running small businesses. Coming up with nasty rules and codes of practice just to make other people's lives difficult, forcing us to fill in planning applications and then wait for ages while they consult the owners of surrounding properties, then cruelly pushing small businesses into bankruptcy by refusing to give them any juicy contracts.

What utter rubbish. The true enemy of small business is big business. The fact that enormous multinationals will do everything cheaper - even if it means operating at a loss until the competition folds - is what wrecks the chances of so many small businesses. The fact that it's so difficult to make a reasonable living that many people just decide to pack it in and work for someone else because they're guaranteed a salary for their efforts. Being self employed takes a lot of work, a lot of self-discipline, and a fair bit of good luck, and most of the people who try it will fail. If you're not passionate about the freedom, your one big idea, or possibly even the money you might one day stand to make, you probably won't think that it's all worth the effort. And you know, that's okay, because most of us work to pay the bills, and would probably just retire if we had David Cameron's money, instead of running all over the country telling other people off for not being productive enough.

A few months ago, the government were falling over each other to tell us how public sector workers sit on their arses all day eating hobnobs and having competitions with each other to see who can waste the most taxpayers' money. Now they're malicious little goblins undermining business, presumably so that everyone else is forced into the outdated socialist gulag alongside them. It's difficult to see how they can be both.
