"De Phobia Verbis"
"About Phobia Words"

Helpful tip: If you feel that a new "phobia" word should be invented, you probably should leave the invention of the word to the experts. Not only do people in general have no frackin' clue how to form such compounds, they also have no idea whether the word element they are using is Greek or Latin. I mean, somniphobia (Latin somnus, "sleep")? Hypnophobia (Greek ὕπνος, "sleep") is just fine.

Graeco-Latin hybrids are not inherently wrong. It is just that they are almost always unnecessary. Words like television are actually just fine because the word procul, the Latin translation of the Greek tele ("far off"), was never productive (or even used, it seems) in compound words.

latin, word_formation, greek
