I thought my smeee hummingbird friends overlooked their little oasis in my atrium this year.  My neighbors have hatched some babies already.  But this morning as I was watering all the plants in my outside room my newest little buddy buzzed me and hummed above my head alerting me to her neat and tightly woven tiny nest.  She was in the process of adding the finishing touches.  I think she is a Calypte costa or Costa’s hummingbird although it’s hard to say at this point.  I am just so honored that again this year my family will be host and protectors of her little family.

I have worked diligently over the past 3 years to take my slice of earth that surrounds my home and transform it into a haven for all the fauna that surrounds us.  I have the sweetest most docile bumblebees eating from my lavender, several different species of butterfly that love my many lantana and snail vines, some rolly-polly black monster bee-ship thingies that love the hibiscus (they’re funny and a bit scary), I had two different turtle doves nesting and roosting in my elm tree, and now my little Costa in my ficus.  She comes for the hummingbird-delectable salvias I’ve put everywhere especially for them.  I think she also must like the sheltered protection that my atrium, which is surrounded on all sides by my house, must offer.  She comes buzzing in from above and nestles into her little nest.  I noticed she even borrowed a few of Kai’s soft white fluffies to blanket her babies.  I can’t wait to see who we hatch this year!
