“Apocalypto”…whatever else the man is…Mel Gibson can make brilliant movies! It was visually astounding. The decision to use Yucatec Maya instead of English and indigenous people helps to further submerse the viewer into this world. I have subsequently read reviews of this movie criticizing the historical accuracy of the film. To that I reply: this movie is not entitled “A History of Mayan Civilization.” It has a fictional name and is a fictional accounting. Rudy Youngblood, cast as the protagonist Jaguar Paw, was phenomenal. His face is art in-and-of-itself. The audience-heart is at his expression’s mercy. The black jaguar… a larger version of my little Bageerah.
The rest of my weekend was social and restful as I took a break from creative home projects to focus on friendship and reading. And now the week ahead…
