Why the Mormon Church's support of Prop 8 makes no sense theologically.

As a former Mormon, it makes absolutely no sense to me why the Mormon Church supported Proposition 8. I can understand why the Catholics and other evangelical Christian churches all supported it, but not the Mormons. I've been thinking about this for days and have finally put my finger on what's so fundamentally wrong about this.

Yeah, seriously. I can see how the normal religions are up in arms, because they don't really claim any special or unique rite compared to the legal marriage ceremonies.

But for the Mormons, two gay people getting married is about as relevant as a Catholic man and woman getting married.

Huh! That's a great point! I went and looked up the original statements of the prophet dude to see what he said, but he didn't touch on it. Hm.

Well, and the Mormon Church changed their marriage laws a number of times before reaching the current state. Of course, for Utah to gain recognition as a state this necessitated a conveniently timed "new revelation" that suddenly declared polygamy yesterday's news. Hmm.

This probably explains why a number of Mormons are less than happy about their church's support. As in, they've left it.
