For years Haagen-Dazs has made and sold green tea flavored ice cream in Japan and the rest of Asia. For some reason they've never marketed it in the US. Until now! I just found it at my neighborhood Fred Meyer, of all places. It's a Limited Edition flavor that just came out this year. I made sure to buy two pints (and plan to buy more) to encourage them to make it a permanent flavor offering.
I had some of it while I was in Tokyo and oh man! it was soooo good. The only matcha flavored ice cream that I've ever had that tasted better was at this artisan food display at a depachika that was made right in Kyoto, and that ice cream was better because of the quality of the matcha powder, not the quality of the cream itself. Most of the green tea ice cream here in the US is too lean (not nearly enough butterfat!) or sweetened with corn syrup or emulsified with guar gum/caragheenan or tinted with artificial food colorings. Yech.
I just came home, ripped it open, and tasted. OMG, love! <3
