Wow... considering that you don't like movie violence, you certainly have seen a ton of the most violent movies on the list and missed a bunch of the nonviolent ones. Since you're taking a film class, I assume you like movies in general -- what kinds of movies do you like particularly well (other than ones with elves, hobbits, and spell slinging child prodigies, of course)?
not knowing your preferences at all, might i suggest:
lola rennt
donnie darko
american history x (ok this one has a few extremely violent scenes, although they are brief and the particularly bad one is quite obvious that its coming such that you can look away well ahead of time. its an amazing movie though.)
sen to chihiro no kamikakushi (spirited away) (and for that matter, Mononoke Hime, and Tonari No Totoro. We've got all of these in McCabe, and Tonari No Totoro is the cutest movie ive ever seen by far.
paths to glory (maybe. its a war movie but i dont remember it being particularly violent and its strongly anti-war)
some like it hot (how can anyone resist jack lemmon in a dress?)
dr. strangelove
one flew over the cuckoo's nest
Overall, the top 100 is pretty heavily weighted towards newer, violent movies. There are a lot of good films to be found in slots 101-250.
