[fox reads] Blood and Destiny

Okay, so I know most of you are readers of gay romance, primarily, but I just finished reading a heterosexual urban fantasy novel that I just loved, and I wanted to share the joy. Blood and Destiny, by Kaye Chambers, was so much fun to read that I had a hard time putting it down to get back to my own writing!

This book hits on so many of my narrative kinks that it's like it was written just for me. Outcast characters, parent issues, political maneuvering, questions of loyalty, chosen families, and struggling against one's own nature... I loved it.

The main character, Destiny, is a lion shifter private investigator whose chosen sister (they were raised in the same orphanage), a wolf shifter, is marrying the local pack alpha. Destiny was involved with the local vampire king in the past, but split up with him months before the start of the story. She has to ask him for help, though, when a case requires her to investigate vampires. For a bit of added complication, there's another lion shifter visiting from out of town for Destiny's sister's wedding.

There are a lot of subplot threads in this story, and I was really impressed with how well the author brought them all together in the end.

The best thing I can say about this story -- I imagine some of you authors out there will understand how big of a deal this is -- is that I had a really easy time just falling into the story and enjoying it. I didn't stop to think about the writing or the craft of it. It was that good.

I finished reading it on Friday and I'm still basking in the glow of how good that felt.

samhain publishing, fox reads too!
